Furukawa America Unveils Large Diameter Fusion Splicer

Peachtree City, GA - Furukawa America Inc. is unveiling a new large diameter fusion splicer at the optics industry's premier annual conference: OFC/NFOEC, in Anaheim, Mar. 27-29.

Jointly developed by The Furukawa Electric Company Ltd. and 3SAE Technologies Inc., this advanced splicing machine is ideal for work with high power laser systems, medical devices, military defense systems, and other high-tech applications.

The new large diameter fusion splicer builds upon the robust performance of FITEL's S177A hand-held core alignment splicer and expands its capabilities to splice up to 400 micron fiber. The unique design effectively blends the precision and performance of a specialty splicing machine with the portability, speed, and ease of operation of FITEL's S177 series machines.

"We've developed this splicer to bring an affordable splicing solution to the market's need for cost-effective large diameter fiber splicing," said Jason Greene, fusion splicer division manager for Furukawa America.

Furukawa teamed with 3SAE Technologies, Inc. for this unique splicer design as 3SAE specializes in custom splicing solutions for the OEM photonics industry and mission-critical military, government, aerospace, medical, and oil and gas applications. 3SAE holds multiple patents and awards related to optical fiber preparation and continues its focus on development of new fiber optic tools and technologies for key fiber applications.

In addition to its new splicer, Furukawa America also showcased its FITEL fiber optic component equipment at OFC/NFOEC, including FITEL 980nm and 1480nm pump lasers, signal lasers, active and passive optical components, optical amplifiers and connectors.
