The P114-VOA (variable optical attenuator) is an evaluation system for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) applications. It allows complex optical wavelength systems to be rapidly prototyped and controlled, and it reduces system time to market. The system facilitates device evaluation by providing an interface to control the heaters in a VOA.
The system includes an evaluation board, a multi-channel variable optical attenuator, and software. The module is managed via a high-speed serial bus. For rapid setup the module can be operated from a PC, but can also be driven from a range of microcontrollers. Applications supported by the evaluation system include transmit channel attenuation, optical amplifier gain loss padding, gain equalization, and add channel attenuation.
The dimensions for the VOA evaluation board are 220mm x 100mm and it ships with on-board memory. It is based on industry accepted silica-on-silicon technology.
