University Of Stuttgart Goes For NEXTROM Optical Fiber Technology

The Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW) of the Universität Stuttgart, reputed as one of the leading laser research centres worldwide has chosen Nextrom, the world premier supplier of state-ofthe- art technology in Optical Fiber and Fiber Optic Cables manufacturing to provide a MCVD Preform manufacturing, a fiber Draw tower, and various auxiliary equipment for automatic material refilling and waste gas treatment.

The fiber production facility that will be installed at the IFSW within this year, will mainly be used for the research on fiber delivery for the next generation of industrial high power lasers with very high brightness. To allow the flexible and reliable delivery of multi-kilowatt lasers (e.g. thin disk lasers) with near-diffraction limited beam quality over distances in the order of 100 m, new concepts have to be developed.

For example, the power densities have to be kept sufficiently low to avoid losses due to non-linear effects. At the same time, power and beam quality have to be preserved even under significant, nonuniform bending of the fiber. This may be combined with other features, as for example polarization conservation. One possible concept to achieve this are evanescently coupled multicore fibers. Later on, using novel pumping concepts, the field of research may be expanded to encompass fiber lasers also.

Nextrom is the world's premier supplier of manufacturing solutions and services to the Fiber Optic industry and supplies Optical Fiber Manufacturing Systems for fiber drawing, deuterium treatment, proof-testing, coloring, ribbon and blown fiber (EPFU), as well as Preform Manufacturing Systems for core preforms by MCVD or VAD technology, and cladding by tube sleeving (RIT, RIC) or soot cladding with related equipments such as sintering, degassing and preform stretching.

Together with its sister company Rosendahl, a global supplier of high-end cable equipment and turn key solutions in the field of Extrusion, SZ Stranding, Forming, Welding & Corrugation, we offer state-of-the art technology with best of services and a long experience in the wire, cable and fiber business. Rosendahl & Nextrom belong to the Knill Group in Austria, an international active, privately owned company group. The activities of the Knill Group cover the Electrical Division, the Cable and Wire Division and the Bakery Division. With around 800 employees a total turnover of 100 Mio. Euro is made in the 17 group companies.
