Sprint Rolls Out Upgraded NEC Switches for ATM Network

The N/A (Herndon, VA) is working with N/A (Westwood, KS) to upgrade its line of NEC asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) core backbone switches throughout Sprint's nationwide long-distance network. The upgrade of the NEC switches from 10 Gbps to a fully redundant 40 Gbps network is part of an established agreement through which NEC serves as Sprint's ATM core switch provider.

More than 20 NEC switch upgrades and consolidations have been placed in Sprint's core network since the agreement. Once the upgrade and consolidation project is completed, Sprint will have nine 40 Gbps ATOMNET/M20 core switches in its network. The newest generation of ATOMNET core switches feature performance enhancements, including optical components for DWDM interfaces, fabric capacity scalable from 40 to 160 Gbps, higher speed interfaces, increased call capacity, superior traffic management, and easily managed network scalability.
