Seiko Instruments USA Inc. Fiber Optics Group introduces the SMU Connector Series
Seiko Instruments USA Inc. Fiber Optics Group introduces the SMU Connector Series. Featuring a miniature sub-assembly design, the new single-mode connector series reduces the number of component pieces required from seven to five, offering significant cost savings in both piece cost and assembly time for large installations and system upgrades. The MU Optical Connector assemblies offer core-eccentricity adjustment in four positions and comply with flammability test standard UL94 V-0 for high performance and reliability.

Seiko Instruments MU Connectors can be used in a variety of fiber optic applications including high-speed data communications, voice networks, telecommunications, and high-density DWDM applications in central offices. The new connectors' small size is especially valuable in backplane connector applications where space constraints are at a premium. Availability of simplex, duplex, 8-way and 16-way connector adapters further complement backplane-type situations. The connectors feature an insertion loss rate as low as 0.25 dB, providing improved transmission capabilities over existing standard connector types. Depending on the polishing method, typical return loss ranges from 50~55dB.

The SMU Connector Series is composed of single-mode fiber, zirconia ceramic ferrule material and will accommodate a fiber cordage diameter of 2mm, 1.1mm, and 0.9mm. The precision manufactured 1.25mm diameter ferrule allows optimum plug miniaturization design, significantly
increasing the number of connectors that can be installed in a limited space over the standard
2.5 diameter ferrule size. The fiber cord is retained via a heat shrinking tube fixed to the kevlar, enabling easy assembly and mass production.

Designed with a familiar phone jack style housing, connectors snap easily into place and are compatible with JIS, CECC, IEEE, and IEC. They are also certified to Telcordia Compliance Assembly and Testing and meet Fiber Channel specifications.

"Seiko Instruments' SMU Optical Connector Series meet industry demands for increasingly smaller devices to maximize space and save costs," said Steve Baldo, National Sales Manager for Seiko Fiber Optic Products Group. "Customers will be pleased with the number of connectors they can now design into a DWDM module, panel or add into an existing closet or rack."

Seiko Instruments SMU Optical Connectors will find applications in growing companies requiring expansion of telephones, faxes and computers. Previously, rapid growth may have forced companies to add rooms to their building to accommodate additional computer requirements for handling increased phone, fax, and computer load. Now, connector cable assemblies can be easily added to existing computer rooms to meet that expansion without incurring extra building costs.
