Shomiti Systems
Market Opportunity
During the 1990's, local area networking has been dramatically altered by the advent of "fast" networking technologies. "Fast LANs" composed of LAN switches, Fast Ethernet, and, most recently, Gigabit Ethernet devices, have allowed network managers to redesign their LANs for markedly better performance. These technologies share an important common thread. At the core of each is some version of custom, dedicated chip set that delivers "next-generation" performance.
While networking companies have been boosting performance by aggressively applying silicon to their forwarding devices, network management companies have largely been idle in this area. With few exceptions, management devices today were designed to operate on yesterday's low-speed shared networks. With the exception of expensive, high-end test tools, few existing devices have the performance or sophistication to provide adequate management solutions for Fast and Gigabit Ethernet.
Shomiti Systems' charter is to provide such systems. Shomiti was founded by a team of LAN switch veterans who understood the lack of applicable management products. This team realized that the same hardware design principles employed in switches could be used to design a new breed of products for the monitoring and analysis of Ethernet networks.
