Romania's RoEduNet Educational Network Selects Nortel Optical Solution
London, United Kingdom - The Romanian Educational Network (RoEduNet) has chosen a Nortel(1) next-generation 10G optical solution to provide scientists and researchers with enough bandwidth and network capacity needed for major science and research projects as well as education and training. Felix Telecom, Nortel's integration partner in Romania, will deliver the project to RoEduNet including design, installing, deploying and providing ongoing servicing for the network.
The adaptive and intelligent RoEduNet(2) optical network from Nortel will unite all Romania's key Research and Educational facilities, using more than 4,239 kms of optical fibre to connect cities and campuses. The network provides universities, high schools, cultural, scientific and research non profit institutions with the means to communicate with each other, as well as delivering access to higher-speed, always-on connectivity.

Nortel 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Technology makes it possible for RoEduNet to effect a smooth and cost-effective transition from its 10G network to 40G and later to 100G. With Nortel it is possible to increase network bandwidth simply and economically to cope with bandwidth-sapping applications like IPTV, Internet video and grid computing for faster processing capabilities. This is a powerful benefit for cash-conscious research and educational institutions.
The RoEduNet Romania-wide 10G optical network infrastructure uses a solution that is built on Nortel's flagship Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 convergence platform and Common Photonic Layer line system, enabling a more agile, adaptive, next-generation optical network. It includes Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer capability (ROADM) on the CPL and electronic Dynamically Compensating Optics (eDCO) on the Optical Multiservice Edge 6500. ROADM enables rapid changes to service and traffic patterns by allowing users to dynamically add and drop optical wavelengths without terminating them. eDCO allows wavelengths to be routed through the network independent of distance, fibre dispersion and network topology.
Nortel's 10G optical technology can deliver both 40G and 100G network capacity through the addition of simple 'plug and play' technology components. This enables RoEduNet to upgrade to 40G when needed without wholesale re-engineering of the optical layer. Nortel's 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine dynamically corrects changes in optical signals wherever they develop over thousands of kilometres to ensure a clean transmission is maintained over any type of fibre used today.
Nortel's Optical Network Manager is being used by RoEduNet to conduct network-wide administration, monitoring and planning from a single management centre in Bucharest. This enables rapid troubleshooting, fault resolution and traffic management with no need for technical personnel to visit individual network nodes.
