Premier European Optical Communications Event To Host Conclusion Of OIF Interoperability Demonstration

UK - Seven of the world's leading telecom operators will gather under the banner of the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) on the exhibition floor at this year's European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC). The exhibition will take place at Europe's biggest conference centre, the Internationales Congress Centrum Berlin, 17th - 19th September 2007.

The operators - AT&T, China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom Group, KDDI, Telecom Italia and Verizon - will be showing results of the 2007 OIF Worldwide Interoperability Demonstration - On-Demand Ethernet Services. The event, a showcase of dynamic Ethernet services over multiple control plane-enabled intelligent optical core networks, is the first ever conducted in Europe.

"With all the major industry players gathered in Berlin, ECOC is the ideal location to showcase the results of this high profile, worldwide collaborative demonstration," said Hans-Martin Foisel of Deutsche Telekom and OIF Carrier Working Group chair and vice president. "At the show, we will be able to demonstrate interoperability to all the key players from all levels of the communications industry."

Graham Finnie, Chief Analyst at Heavy Reading, commented: "Optical technology is once again moving centre stage in the telecommunications industry, largely because of the relentless rise in demand for bandwidth. As high definition TV, new games and DVD players, and a plethora of bandwidth-hungry Internet applications spread, telcos are scrambling to replace their copper access networks with fibre, as well as increasing the bandwidth in aggregation and transport networks.

"Demand for optical technology can only increase over the next few years," concluded Finnie. The 33rd annual ECOC will feature over 300 exhibitors and a comprehensive speaker line-up, including some of the world's leading technical developers, both commercial and academic, addressing key industry topics. Confirmed speakers at the conference include: Gregory Raybon of Alcatel-Lucent - 100 Gbit/s: ETDM generation and long haul transmission; Biswanath Mukherjee of the Dept. of Computer Science - Univ. of California Davis, USA - Optical Networks: The Road Ahead; and Russel Davey of BT - Long-reach Access and Future Broadband Network Economics.

Also, on the exhibition floor, visitors will be able to see and take part in a number of new, interactive features: the FTTx Resource centre, delivered by The Light Brigade, will be a focal point for all things FTTx; the live demonstration area, where the latest optical communications products will be showcased; a new, free training area, where the CTTS will give free, practical training courses in fusion splicing and fibre preparation tools; and the second ECOC Market Focus seminars, which will this year feature presentations from Hans-Martin Foisel of Deutsche Telekom and the OIF, Don Clarke of BT, senior executives at Ericsson, JDSU and Bookham, and a view on the European FTTH market from Heavy Reading's Graham Finnie.
