Optical Performance Monitor
The OPM measures optical power, wavelength and signal-to-noise ratio. As DWDM systems become more complex, so does the need to measure system performance. With the OPM, slight deviations in performance are detected and information provided can be used to prevent systems failures. Applications for the OPM include power equilization, multi-channel wavelength locking, long-term span monitoring, system commissioning and fault sectionalization.
Because of its small size (less than 1 inch thick with a customizable footprint), the OPM is easily deployed on the network. It supplies a peak power range of +5 to -50 dB, and optical signal-to-noise ratio monitoring capabilities of 25 to 30 dB. In addition, the OPM can measure noise as low as -80 dBm and can be used for systems with channel spacing as narrow as 50 GHz.
