OFC '99: Gain Equalization Filters

Source: HighWave Optical Technologies
A range of custom gain equalization filters flatten the non-uniform gain variation across the full EDFA window from 1500 to 1600 nm

A range of custom gain equalization filters flatten the non-uniform gain variation across the full EDFA window from 1500 to 1600 nm. The company produces slanted Bragg gratings which are photo-written in a specific fiber order to couple the guided light into the core, towards the radiative modes.

A flat gain profile over the entire 30 nm bandwidth is used for dense wavelength division multiplexing (especially for 32, 64 or 128 channels), and makes the cascading of EDFA possible without disturbing channel amplitude.

Features include:

  • Gain flatness planeity: <±0.4 dB
  • Low ripple: <0.1dB
  • Low insertion loss: <0.8dB
  • Athermal package size: 55 x 5.5 x 5.5 mm
  • Wavelength variation with temperature: 50 pm/70 °C
