The new PTC-48 series of OC-48 optical transponder products has been developed in response to the growing demand for more integration and functionality of high-performance modules and subsystems for the metropolitan/access and high-speed premises networking markets. The optical transponders combine the functionality of an optical transceiver with SONET/SDH electronic multiplexing (MUX) and de-multiplexing (DEMUX) including clock and data recovery (CDR) together in a single package.

The transmitter portion of the OC-48 transponder accepts sixteen OC-3/STM-1 (155 Mb/s) electronic signals, multiplexes them together and provides a single OC-48/STM-16 (2.5 Gb/s) optical signal at the output. The receiver portion of the transponder performs the reverse function, accepting a single OC-48/STM-16 optical signal and providing back sixteen OC-3/STM-1 electronic signals at the output.

The series is fully compliant with the requirements of the SONET & /SDH standards. It is available in all the distance options: Short Reach (2 km), Intermediate Reach (15 km), Long Reach (40 km) and Extended Long Reach (80 km). All transponders satisfy Class I Laser Safety requirements in accordance with the US FDA/CDRH and international IEC-825 standards. The family is size and pin-out compatible with the industry de-facto standard for OC-48 transponders. In addition, OCP OC-48 transponders have several unique competitive advantages. For example, the transponders feature very low power consumption (4.5 watt typical), wide operating case temperature range (from 0 degree C to +75 degree C) and a unique diagnostic function. The internal diagnostic circuitry monitors the integrity of major and critical functional blocks of the transponder and provides an output alarm if any of these functions is not working properly.
