Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN)> (White Plains, NY) has signed a multi-million dollar deal for Nortel Networks (Brampton, ON) optical equipment to connect major cities throughout Europe, its second agreement in two months with the vendor. The deal follows an estimated $250 million contract for North American deployment.

Metromedia's European network will connect 16 major cities in five countries. The carrier will deploy Nortel's OPTera LH dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) system, scalable to more than 1 Tb/s capacity. Nortel will also provide Metromedia program management, network design, implementation, integration, network surveillance, first-line maintenance, and emergency response services. The network will be managed from Metromedia Fiber Network's European network operations center in Amsterdam, using Nortel's Preside network management tools.
