Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN)> (New York) has awarded Nortel Networks (Brampton, ON) an estimated $250-million contract over three years to build its optical network backbone. Metromedia Fiber Network, which already uses Nortel Networks' OPTera Metro technology for enterprise applications within U.S. cities, will now deploy OPTera Long-Haul (LH) to create a leading-edge network connecting major cities across the country.

By deploying Nortel Networks' OPTera LH, which takes advantage of dense-wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), Metromedia Fiber Network will have a network that is scalable to more than one terabit per second capacity. D-WDM maximizes traffic-carrying ability by splitting light into multiple channels. Metromedia will also take advantage of Nortel's Global Professional Services, a suite of network optimization services including network surveillance, spares management, emergency response, and program management.
