The EVOA (Electronic Variable Optical Attenuator) is a silicon-based multi-channel optical device that reduces the space requirements and eases design constraints for multi-channel DWDM systems. The device is manufactured using ASOC technology, which uses high-volume production methods to build reliable integrated optical devices. The device uses solid state attenuation.
The device accepts four independent optical channels, each with its own input/output fibers, and applies a controlled optical attenuation to each one. Operating over the 1300-1610nm wavelength range, it features high attenuation of 30dB, allowing it to "block" or "turn off" specific channels for system configuration or applications such as add-drop multiplexing. The device features an electronic response speed of over 1MHz, allows rapid re-configuration, and can be used to modulate channel information on to the digital signal.
