Source: Ciena Corporation
Ciena Corporation released by telecom market research firm RHK Inc. (San Francisco) shows that <%=company%> (Linthicum, MD) led 1999 shipments of WDM equipment in Europe with a 35% market share, followed by Nortel Networks (Brampton, ON) at 23%, Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ) at 17%, and Alcatel (Paris) at 13%. Spurred by increased demands in data traffic, pan-European network build-outs, and increased global connectivity, the market for European WDM technologies reached $532 million in 1999, more than doubling 1998 figures.

Ciena dominated the market in Europe because of the fast delivery of WDM systems and availability of optical networking tools. Nortel more than doubled its 1998 European sales, driven mainly by the combination of STM-64 MS-SPRings and DWDM products. Lucent captured business from new entrants in the pan-European space and several trans-Channel operators implementing SDH technologies. Alcatel landed hybrid network projects involving undersea and terrestrial links. Pirelli, Ericsson, Siemens, and Marconi followed with a combined 11% of the market.

RHK's European WDM and Optical Networks Service covers the role of WDM systems in Europe. RHK defines the European market as the fifteen member nations of the European Union (EU) and four non-EU states: the Czech Republic, Norway, Poland, and Switzerland.
