Lucent's AllWave Optical Fiber Scores Two Technology 'Firsts'

Norcross, Ga. -- Lucent Technologies announced the successful completion of field trials in Buenos Aires demonstrating the ability of Lucent's AllWave(R) optical fiber to simultaneously handle analog cable television, 10 gigabit digital voice transmission and gigabit Ethernet data transmission over an embedded metro network -- a world first.

The trials also demonstrated AllWave's ability to increase optical fiber capacity by 50 percent via transmission in the 1400 nm band of the optical spectrum -- a spectrum unavailable in other optical fibers. This was achieved through the elimination of the phenomenon known as "water peak loss," a condition where water trapped in the optical fiber during manufacturing typically causes signal losses in the 1400 nm band.

Cablevision was extremely pleased with the outcome of the trial.

"The theoretical presentations on AllWave were convincing. However, nothing compares to seeing this trial on our own network," said Claudio Watson, chief engineer of Cablevision, one of the largest cable television networks in Buenos Aries.

This trial demonstrated AllWave's multifaceted ability to transmit cable television analog signals, 10 Gb/s telephony digital data and Gigabit Ethernet data simultaneously over a single AllWave fiber using three transmission "windows" at 1300 nm, 1400 nm and 1550 nm. During the trial, to ensure that all transmissions were error-free, Optical Spectrum Analysis, eye diagrams and Bit Error Rate Tests monitored the transmission signals.

"The live demonstration over Cablevision's metropolitan network in Buenos Aires illustrates that the Lucent AllWave metropolitan fiber solution is the strongest, highest-capacity and most flexible metropolitan optical fiber on the market," said Denys Gounot, president of Lucent's Optical Fiber Solutions business. "And by opening up the 1400 nm spectrum through elimination of water peak loss, AllWave gives service providers room for continuing future growth."

The right optical fiber choice for metropolitan networks is critical due to the fact that most metro networks are becoming networks that have to support cost-effectively a wide range of applications. Metropolitan networks also have to be optical fiber systems designed to support both emerging technologies such as Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Wide Wave Division Multiplexing (WWDM) while still sustaining older legacy transmission systems.

The goal of the Buenos Aires AllWave field trials was to illustrate both the economic and marketing benefits metropolitan network service providers can achieve by deploying voice, video and data over AllWave fiber in serving their customers. The trial in association with Cablevision also demonstrated AllWave is a powerful solution for cable television networks as well.

Optical fiber has become the primary backbone of the Internet revolution because of its enormous capacity for transmitting voice, data and video. Lucent Technologies' Optical Fiber Solutions business changed the very nature of the optical fiber industry with the concept of optical fibers that are optimized for specific applications such as long distance (TrueWave(R)), metropolitan networks (AllWave(R)) and for undersea networks (UltraWave(R)).

Lucent's Optical Fiber Solutions is a world leader in the manufacture of optical fibers, cabled optical fiber, specialty optical fibers, and optical fiber equipment. Lucent Technologies' Optical Fiber Solutions business is headquartered in Norcross, Ga., and leads the industry in the shift to new application-specific fibers beginning with its introduction of TrueWave Fiber in 1993. Lucent's AllWave Fiber was named as one of Industry Week magazine's "Technologies of the Year."
