Telecast Fiber Systems, Inc. today announced that five of its Viper II fiber optic systems have been permanently installed by KCNC, the Denver-based CBS owned and operated station, at Coors Field. The system was first used to broadcast the April 2 season opener between the Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals.

"Although we have had fiber installed from the beginning, this is the first time in the history of Coors Field that we had a technically flawless opening day, and that success is due to the new installation of the Viper II," said Kimo Quaintance, KCNC Maintenance Supervisor. "From the General Manager to the field personnel, everyone at KCNC was incredibly pleased."

Each of the five Viper II fiber optic systems TX5122 modules is enclosed in an environmentally sealed box, which protects against the volcanic dust of the warning track, previously a continuous source of transmission problems. The Viper II systems provide video and audio, and are connected to the media room, which is linked to the microwave relay system. A second audio and data channel is also present for future use. An input/output panel is connected to the Viper II in each of the five field locations. The small size and durability of the Viper II modules allow KCNC cameramen to plug in for live broadcasts without the need for a media cart.

Telecast's Viper II is a modular system housed in a 16-slot card cage in a 19-inch universal-mounting frame that is only 3 RU high. It provides mix-and-match multi-channel analog or digital, video or audio function modules that can be placed in any slot. Function modules, transmitters or receivers, have front-panel displays and typically occupy one slot. Power supplies, providing auto-sensing 90 to 240 VAC, and alarmed UPS modules, providing 10 to 30 minutes of backup, occupy two slots each. Fully loaded with 14 modules, the Viper II consumes less than 100 watts.

Stand-alone modules housing one transmitter or receiver function are also available as wall mount, tabletop, or throw-down units. The stand-alone modules can easily be transferred into a standard Viper II rack frame, becoming plug-in cards with the same quality, performance, and reliability.
