Agile Core Enables Ultimate Flexibility Through Multi-degree ROADM Technology

ADVA Optical Networking announced today that Kabel Deutschland, the largest cable operator in Germany, has selected its 100G coherent transport for a new nationwide backbone network. Forming part of ADVA Optical Networking's Agile Core solution, Kabel Deutschland will deploy 100G technology along with multi-degree, directionless ROADMs. Consisting of 26 major nodes and more than 50 intermediate sites, this network includes a fully meshed backbone throughout Germany.

"After a thorough selection process, it became clear which company was the right fit for us," said Frank Hellemink, vice president network engineering Kabel Deutschland. "From the innovative technology to the excellent performance of the 100G pilot link trial between Hamburg and Berlin, ADVA Optical Networking has proven to be the right choice. This future-proof solution is cost-effective and allows for fully-automated remote configuration supported by a rich service management implementation. We are very satisfied with the end product."

Multi-degree, directionless ROADM technology provides Kabel Deutschland with the flexibility required to quickly provision new services. This flexibility is key to the network's success as some links stretch more than 1,000 kilometers. This fully-automated 100G network reduces operational costs, planning requirements and lead times.

"We're building tremendous momentum with our Agile Core solution," said Hartmut Müller-Leitloff, vice president sales, Central Europe, ADVA Optical Networking. "It minimizes time-to-revenue and significantly lowers opportunity costs. Service providers recognize the need to build a core that enables them to seize new business opportunities while radically lowering operating expenses. There are three clear building blocks at play here: ROADM technology, a control plane and 100G transmission technologies. Once these are in place, you have an automated network that not only provisions new services, but also monitors your entire network."

The FSP 3000 is a scalable Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system specifically designed for large enterprises and service providers that require a flexible, cost-effective system that will multiplex, transport and protect high-speed data, storage, voice and video applications over fiber optic networks. The FSP 3000 complements all IP/MPLS packet engines to deliver efficient multi-layer next-generation packet transport.
