Ciena Corporation> (Linthicum, MD) and Juniper Networks Inc. (Mountain View, CA)report successful 10 Gb/s (OC-192c/STM-64) interoperability testing between Ciena's MultiWave CoreStream optical transport system and Juniper's M160 core Internet protocol (IP) router. The tests passed 10 Gb/s IP data packets with the Juniper router connected to the Ciena transport system.

"We've already implemented IP over glass at 2.5Gbps," says Julian de Bosdari, senior vice president, marketing and business development at iaxis, a pan-European network operator using CIENA and Juniper systems at its network core. "For iaxis, the ability to multiply this fourfold and transport 10G IP signals over glass is an essential enabler in delivering new generation e-commerce and application portals."

The M160 provides aggregate route lookup rates in excess of 160 million packets per second and aggregate throughput exceeding 160 Gb/s. CoreStream is the industry's first intelligent optical transport platform scalable to a capacity of approximately 2Tbps.
