MPB Communications offers the most complete range of Raman pump modules available, addressing both in-line and extended reach applications.
MPB Communications offers the most complete range of Raman pump modules available, addressing both in-line and extended reach applications. The flatpack is a smaller form factor unit designed to be incorporated into telecom manufacturers' subracks. A typical flatpack includes: the pump laser diodes, the Raman fiber laser optical train, the drive and control electronics, the Raman laser/signal band WDM, tap couplers for monitoring signal power and Raman laser power (as well as the power at individual wavelengths in dual-wavelength models), an optical isolator and, for in-line amplifier applications, a gain-flattening filter.

The main application for these units is for in-line Raman amplifiers in high-capacity DWDM systems, where the high composite signal powers overwhelm the Raman gain readily achievable with multiplexed laser diode Raman pumps. However, the high-power flatpack units can also be used for distributed Raman amplification and remote EDFA pumping in long-span applications.
