Fujitsu first to use Corning DCM module in long-haul system

Corning, New York -- Corning Incorporated, a leading supplier of optical fiber and photonics products, announced today that Fujitsu Limited, a leader in 10 Gb/s optical networks, has entered into a multi-million dollar supply agreement for Corning's PureForm™ DCM® Module for LEAF optical fiber.

Fujitsu will be the first to incorporate the recently introduced PureForm DCM Module into its next generation long-haul transmission system. Full details of the agreement were not disclosed, however shipments have begun.

The PureForm DCM Module for LEAF fiber will be incorporated into Fujitsu's FLASHWAVE™ OADX, a leading high-capacity optical long-haul add/drop platform. The FLASHWAVE OADX, now being shipped to customers, is capable of transmitting 1.76 terabits per second over vast distances - without regeneration.

Corning's PureForm DCM Module for LEAF fiber provides broadband dispersion slope compensation. Broad dispersion slope compensation results in less residual dispersion per channel, thus better dispersion management and greater system performance versus conventional DCF Modules.

"The combination of Corning's new PureForm DCM Module and Fujitsu's FLASHWAVE OADX allows our customers to transmit signals over 4,000 kilometers without regeneration, significantly reducing network costs," said Yasuo Nagai, general manager of Fujitsu's Optical Module Development Division. "Our relationship with Corning is an important part of Fujitsu's ongoing efforts to provide our customers with state-of-the-art long-haul transmission systems."

The PureForm DCM Module for LEAF fiber provides greater bandwidth and longer system reach by accurately compensating for the dispersion slope of LEAF fiber. LEAF fiber, with its larger effective area, allows higher levels of power to be transmitted through a fiber than standard non-zero dispersion-shifted fibers (NZ-DSFs), while minimizing the nonlinear effects that can degrade overall system performance. This large effective area advantage offers carriers greater bandwidth potential, longer optical reach and overall increased cost efficiency.

"Corning and Fujitsu have a long history in technology collaborations. We are pleased Fujitsu selected Corning's newest DCM Module to complement their FLASHWAVE OADX optical transport platform," said Scott Quist, product line manager, Corning Dispersion Compensation Products. "This agreement is a testament to Corning's proven ability to design and produce reliable dispersion compensation fiber products for leading-edge, high-bit-rate networks."

The PureForm DCM Module for LEAF fiber is part of Corning's growing portfolio of dispersion compensation products, which will be introduced at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC 2001) March 17-22 in Anaheim, CA. (Booth #2638).
