Tellabs Operations, Inc.de VoIP (voice over IP) is being added to the CABLESPAN 2300 universal telephony distribution system to help MSOs (multiple system operators) and service providers deliver IP-based voice and data services over an HFC access infrastructure.

The CABLESPAN system is featured at the Supercomm 2000 trade show in Atlanta. Tellabs is exhibiting in booth 5323 at the Georgia World Congress Center.
The CABLESPAN system's new DOCSIS 1.1 and Packet Cable-compliant remote service unit (RSU-P) and host digital terminal modem (MRF-P) allow dual-mode VoIP and data services to coexist with circuit-switched telephony, cable modems and cable modem terminating systems (CMTS). In addition, the CABLESPAN system's MRF-P is designed with an integrated public switched telephone network (PSTN) gateway, eliminating the need for separate gateway products.

The CABLESPAN 2300 system enables dual-mode VoIP and data services to reach the CATV headend with the option to link to the existing PSTN or route to a managed IP backbone for end-to-end IP services. Both of these handoffs occur within the same CABLESPAN system host digital terminal (HDT) and eliminate the need for a stand-alone CMTS or edge router.
