COLT Plans Networks in Birmingham and Dublin

In an attempt to extend its reach throughout the UK and Ireland, COLT Telecom Group plc (London) is constructing new local fiber-optic networks in Birmingham, England and Dublin, Ireland. The new networks will cover the commercial centers of the cities and are planned to be operational by the end of 2000. This will provide business customers with an extensive range of high bandwidth data, Internet and voice communication services.

The new networks will form an integral part of the company's IP-based pan-European network. COLT has 21 operational networks in nine countries across Europe with a further four—Antwerp, Belgium; Hanover, Germany; Rome; and Stockholm, Sweden—currently under construction. Including Birmingham and Dublin, the company plans to have 27 networks in service by the end of 2000 and 30 to 32 by end 2001.
