Cisco Stakes Core Router Claims in China
Service providers in China are investing in Cisco Systems' 12000 series of core routers, enabling new network architectures that run Internet protocol (IP) traffic on the optical layer, according to Cisco. The list of Chinese service providers include deploying the routers include China Telecom, Shanghai Online, Guangdong CATV, and Dalian CATV.
National telecommunications carrier China Telecom has rolled out a network centered around six of the Cisco routers working into a pan-China IP backbone, Cisco reports. Hub cities include Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
Internet service provider Shanghai Online deployed the core router as part of a packet-over-SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) architecture.
Using Cisco 12008 Gigabit Switch Routers as part of a turnkey project, Guangdong CATV is building a single IP platform to deliver integrated MPEG2 video, H.729 audio, and local area network traffic to more than 400,000 subscribers in 21 cities in the province. The suite of routers and remote access servers enable Guangdong CATV to optimize traffic on its existing SDH backbone, Cisco says.
Dalian CATV is also installing the 12008, transmitting data, voice, and live video throughout the city. The network covers 16 branch nodes in the city, connected by SDH equipment.
