Broadwing, Corvis hit optical network milestone
Saying it is the first communications provider to do so, Broadwing Communications (Austin, Texas) announced the completion of a field trial of 10-Gbit/s optical technology without regeneration over 4000 km. The successful field trial involved Corvis Corp. (Columbia, Maryland) OC-192c all-optical network product and represents another milestone for Broadwing as it continues to deploy an all-optical network.
Broadwing conducted the field trial on its 4,000-km Phoenix, Arizona to Fort Worth, Texas optical loop, representing the longest terrestrial distance to date without any electronic regeneration of the optical signals. Broadwing is currently deploying Corvis' optical routing and transmission technologies on its fiber network. Corvis is an all-optical networking systems provider in which Broadwing made a major investment earlier this year.
