BACKBONE SWITCHES FROM FORE AT THE CORE OF SINGTEL'S NATIONWIDE
ADSL Service Network
SingTel Deploys FORE Systems' ForeRunner Switches for Magix,
Its ADSL Project for Residential Users
BALTIMORE, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- ISPCON '99 FORE Systems Booth #1900 -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE), a leading global supplier for service providers building the new public network infrastructure, announced that it has partnered with Singapore Telecommunications Pte Ltd, Singapore's largest telecommunications services provider, to build the core infrastructure for the country's first ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) network for home users, the SingTel Magix network.
The network provides SingTel Magix's customers with multimedia applications such as voice, data and video at broadband speeds. ADSL technology is deployed throughout the nation to provide multilayer services via asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) products and technology from FORE Systems.
At the core of the network are FORE's award-winning ForeRunner(R) ASX(TM) switches. The network is designed for high reliability, resilience and scalability so moves, adds and changes can be made to operational components of the network without disrupting service. The advanced network also includes fully automatic traffic routing and guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) for voice and other time sensitive data, while at the same time delivering mission critical services at speeds up to 622 Mbps (OC-12).
In the vendor selection process, SingTel put particular emphasis on network functions such as: PNNI (Private Network-to-Network Interface), performance and membership capacity including selective membership leakage (Split Node Operation), multicast performance, SVC (Switched Virtual Connection) performance, ease of use and end-to-end service provisioning. FORE Systems outperformed all other vendors under consideration, according to SingTel officials. It was especially valuable that ForeThought(R), FORE's award-winning software suite, drives the entire ATM switching product line.
"This new SingTel Magix Project verifies SingTel's entry into the ADSL networking arena and gives us a competitive advantage over other leading service providers," said Mr. Yap Tye San, director of technology, SingTel Magix. "We are extremely excited about the ability for us to provide our customers with high end, guaranteed wire-speed transport at rates which exceed the backbone capacity of many other Service Providers. Additionally, FORE's scalable product offering gives us the flexibility to upgrade our backbone network as customer demand requires, while also providing the network resiliency and reliability which is so important with a multiservice, national network. Together, we can provide best-of-breed services that ensure our customers gain the full value and business benefits of the network."
"FORE Systems' partnership with SingTel provides an excellent example of FORE's ability to develop solutions that address the critical areas concerning service providers while creating distinct business advantages," said Niel Viljoen, FORE Systems' senior vice president and general manager, Service Provider Business Unit.
Viljoen continued, "We are pleased that SingTel put its trust and confidence in FORE and we look forward to continuing this relationship as they continue to roll-out new service offerings."
