Avanex Expands Its Tunable Dispersion Compensation And Amplification Platforms For 40Gb/s Transponder Applications
Fremont, CA - Avanex Corporation, a pioneer of intelligent photonic solutions that enable next-generation optical networks, recently expanded its Tunable Dispersion Compensator (TDC) and Amplification platforms for 40Gb/s terminal equipment. Avanex is showcasing these innovative products in booth 15100 at the 33rd European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication Conference (ECOC) on September 17 - 19 at the Internationales Congress Centrum, in Berlin, Germany.
The PowerShaper 3300 and 3400 platforms are the industry's most advanced TDC and integrated amplified TDC solutions compatible with 40Gb/s transmission speeds. These product platforms provide tunable dispersion compensation and amplification for any C-band channel with unprecedented power stability and signal pass-band fidelity.
The migration from 10Gb/s to 40Gb/s transmission speeds requires signal integrity to be maintained over a broad range of system configurations and modulation formats, which increases the need for tunable dispersion compensation. Transponders for 40Gb/s applications rely on amplification to overcome losses associated with on-board optics and high performance power transient control to avoid exposing receivers to hazardous power levels.
The PowerShaper 3300 platform is a compact and simple to use TDC module that can seamlessly integrate into a 40Gb/s transponder line card. The PowerShaper 3400 platform incorporates a power transient controlled EDFA in an integrated amplified TDC module that reduces the overall cost of dispersion compensation and amplification at network terminals.
The intelligent digital control system employed in the Avanex TDC and integrated amplified TDC platforms overcomes complex control, stability and fidelity challenges to achieve an unprecedented less than 10ps of peak to peak group delay ripple. The module can be tuned via the digital interface to optimize and maintain network performance without network operator intervention. The module can also be used in "set and forget" mode as a substitute for fixed dispersion compensators.
The PowerShaper 3300 TDC is compact by design (90x70x12mm) and employs proprietary etalon technology to achieve dynamic dispersion compensation over a smooth, continuous +/- 800ps/nm (at less than 6dB loss) with a dispersion pass-band of 50GHz. Unlike competitive products, the PowerShaper supports any C-band wavelength on or off the ITU grid (arbitrary grid spacing is achieved with a single part number), with precise control of dispersion to less than 20ps/nm. Dispersion and bandwidth can be software configured for a custom bandwidth or dispersion tuning range. The PowerShaper 3300 TDC shares the electrical, mechanical footprint and command interface of the industry leading Avanex PureGain 1600 EDFA platform.
The PowerShaper 3400 amplified TDC is also compact by design (130x100x12mm) and integrates a similar TDC with a power transient controlled EDFA of up to 15dBm output power that shares the electrical, mechanical footprint and command interface of the industry leading Avanex PureGain 2800 platform. Integration of Avanex patented digital controls and advanced thermal management significantly improves the overall efficiency of the module enabling higher line card packing density compared with non-integrated modules. Power transients are suppressed to below +/-0.5dB for an input transient of +/-7dB.
The PowerShaper 3300 and 3400 products are designed to complement the PowerShaper 3200 In-Line TDC. The PowerShaper 3200 provides up to +/-1400 ps/nm of continuous tunability for complete compensation of all channels for fiber spans up to 80 km. By combining the PowerShaper family of advanced TDC products with Avanex's industry-leading family of PowerForm fiber-based fixed compensators, a complete solution is available to meet all needs for dispersion compensation in flexible next-generation networks.
