The PM73487 QRT and PM73488 QSE chip set is used as the switch core for Ericsson's AXD 301 high performance, scalable ATM switching system. The chip set enables the AXD 301 ATM switch to offer near linear scalability from 10 Gbit/s to 160 Gbit/s, making it suitable for both edge and backbone applications. The chip set is a result of a joint development effort between PMC-Sierra and Ericsson.

The QRT (622 Mbit/s Quad Routing Table) features sophisticated traffic management capability which allows per-VC support of Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The QSE (5 Gbit/s Quad Switch Element) supports both unicast and multicast traffic, and has built-in phase aligners to ease back plane designs in switch fabrics. The QRT is packaged in a 503 EPBGA and the QSE is packaged in a 596 EPBGA.
