Agilent Technologies Introduces 16 MBd Optical Transmitter and Receiver for SERCOS Industrial Networks
High Data Rate and Low Costs Aid the Growth of Industrial Networks
Böblingen, Germany, February 26, 2003 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. introduced a fiber optic transmitter and receiver optimized for emerging 16 MBd serial real-time communications system (SERCOS) industrial applications. The Agilent HFBR-1506AM transmitter and HFBR-2506AM receiver provide two-way communication between the system controller and digital drive using a fiber optic cable. With the increased 16 MBd speed, the SERCOS interface can keep pace with the latest, fastest digital drives in the industry.
Developed in Europe, SERCOS is the world's only nonproprietary real-time digital communication standard for motion control on the factory floor. SERCOS was specifically designed to replace the older analog interface, which is susceptible to noise, limited resolution and drift. The introduction of the new SERCON816 controller has quadrupled the speed of its predecessor controller at a much lower price point and supports the 2 MBd and 4 MBd transfer rate now used, as well as 8 MBd or 16 MBd for emerging factory automation requirements. With this development, low-cost 16 MBd fiber optic transmitters and receivers are needed to fully capitalize on the speed performance of the new controller and to help proliferate the growth of distributed factory networking.
The Agilent HFBR-1506AM 650-nm fiber-optic transmitter and HFBR-2506AM receiver will operate at 2, 4, 8 and 16 MBd, use the low-cost SMA connector, and are supplied in a plastic housing coated with a thin layer of metal to enhance their ESD (electrostatic discharge) performance.
The Agilent HFBR-1506AM transmitter incorporates a 650 nm LED providing sufficient optical output to permit the use of both plastic optical fiber enabling a reach of 40 meters, and hard clad silica fiber for a 200-meter reach. The HFBR-2506AM receiver consists of a silicon PIN photodiode and digitizing IC to produce a logic-compatible output. The IC includes a circuit to correct the pulse-width distortion of the first bit after a long idle period to enable operation from DC to 16 MBd with low pulse-width distortion for arbitrary data patterns. The receiver output is compatible with both TTL and CMOS logic.
