Agilent Technologies Announces New Voltage Controlled Oscillators for 10 and 40 Gb/s Networking Systems

Small Footprint, Low-Jitter VCOs Allow Networking Equipment Manufacturers to Design Cost-Effective, Compact Boards and Line Cards

Böblingen, Germany, September 17, 2002 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. announced a new line of voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) with standard coaxial connectors for 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s fiber optic communications systems. Also available are hermetic TO-8 packaged oscillators for 10 Gb/s fiber optic communications. These embedded clocks synchronize data and voice communications systems to operate at U.S.-standard SONET, European-standard STM, and 10 Gb/s Ethernet transmission rates.

Agilent's VCOs perform the multiplexing (MUX), clock data recovery and demultiplexing (DEMUX) clocking necessary for boards and line cards in network routers and long-haul communications systems.

"High-speed optical communications systems require very stringent performance specs for jitter rate, modulation bandwidth and frequency drift," said Michael Huether, Director of Marketing Europe, Middle East and Africa, Semiconductor Products Europe "Agilent's new VCOs meet or exceed our customers' requirements and offer the best combination of size, cost and performance available."

The Agilent VCO product line includes the following part numbers:

10 Gb/s OC-192 /STM-64 and 10 Gb/s Ethernet applications

VTO-8951: 9.5 GHz to 11 GHz - TO-8

(May be operated at 9.95 GHz or 10.75 GHz for 10 Gb/s OC-192 /STM-64 and at 10.324 GHz for 10 Gb/s Ethernet applications.)

10 Gb/s OC-192 /STM-64 applications

VTO-0995-TO8: 9.95 GHz (no FEC - TO-8 package)
VTO-0995-SMA: 9.95 GHz (no FEC)
VTO-1070-SMA: 10.75 GHz (FEC)

40 Gb/s OC-768/STM-256 applications

VTO-1990-SMA: 19.90 GHz (no FEC)
VTO-2150-SMA: 21.50 GHz (FEC)
VTO-3981-K: 39.81 GHz (no FEC)
VTO-4301-K: 43.01 GHz (FEC)

Agilent's VCOs in the hermetic coaxial package have a smaller footprint than competitive DRO (dielectric resonator oscillator)-based VCOs and provide better jitter performance than on-chip VCOs. The TO-8 versions are also hermetically sealed.

The Agilent VCO product line features excellent jitter performance (less than 50 femtosecond) for low bit error rate. Their low frequency drift over temperature and time provides a reliable phase lock, and their wide modulation bandwidth assures that clock and data recovery will meet SONET/SDH specifications. The VCOs are supplied in a compact hermetic metal package with RF connector and measure 0.4 inch (H) x 0.95 inch (W) x 1.18 inch (D), providing excellent reliability, improved thermal conductivity, and reduced size. Hermetic TO-8 oscillators are only 0.2 inch high and 0.5 inch in diameter.

All versions are currently available from Agilent and its distribution partners, with delivery 8 to12 weeks after receipt of order.
