SPARTANBURG, S.C. – AFL Telecommunications announced that it has added lensed fiber capabilities to its portfolio of Photonics products and services. Laser machining technology allows coupling-efficient lenses to be manufactured in volume at low costs. The addition of lensing technology allows AFL Telecommunications to offer OEMs a single source for advanced assembly products and enables a total solution for signal transmission, receiving and amplification of installed fiber.

Lensed fibers are rapidly becoming the choice method for coupling fiber to active devices and waveguides. Lensing technology offers highly efficient couplings while consuming a fraction of the real estate imposed by competing technologies. Laser machining is the most cost efficient and reliable means of manufacturing a lensed fiber. The laser quickly machines the fiber tip into a precise geometry using an optimized numerical solution. In line far field monitoring ensures repeatability and coupling efficiency. In addition, exceptionally high yields allow costly input fibers such as Fiber Bragg Gratings, PM Fiber and metalized fibers to be lensed with minimal cost while maintaining process flow flexibility.

AFL Telecommunications' Advanced Fiber Interface and Assembly platform allows OEMs to consolidate suppliers of metalized fiber, hermetic sleeves, AR coatings, Lensing, Fiber Bragg Gratings and connectorization into a single source for the entire pigtail assembly.

Engineers from AFL will be available to discuss the lensed fiber technology at the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) conference March 19 – 21 in Anaheim, Calif. AFL Telecommunications is in Booth #3232.
