The Hydrosensor was developed specifically for splice cases. When the device comes in contact with water, it induces a power loss resulting from a controlled macrobend. Using a standard OTDR and a regular maintenance program, the locations of wet sensors can be determined. However, when used in conjunction with FibreGuard's monitoring modules system, the macrobend created by the device is immediately detected, and the network engineer notified. Once it has become wet, the sensor remains in "alarm" condition until replaced.

The sensor design is totally dielectric and requires no metal conductor to signal the presence of water. The device is compatible with virtually all enclosures and can be easily installed by technicians. This sensor is cost-effective when compared to potential water damage losses, and it is recommended for installation whenever a splice case is opened and during initial installation of a new system.

The sensor may be used on both dark and active fibers so that any route may be monitored. The unit's small size permits use in many locations. It is designed for water detection and will not give false alarms due to changes in relative humidity. It can be easily integrated into existing monitoring systems.

The device utilizes a proprietary technology to induce a small power loss, indicating there is water in the splice case. The bending force comes from an inert hydrophilic material combined with precise controlled geometry of the unit's moving parts. Quick response is obtained without overstressing the fiber.
