Calabasas, Calif. – March 16, 2001E2O Communications, Inc., a leading manufacturer of fiber optic transceivers for optical communications, has introduced a 12-channel, 2.5 Gbps VCSEL-based, parallel transmitter/receiver link pair for fiber optic communication systems. This 30 Gbps aggregate-throughput unit supports the emerging OIF Very Short Reach Standard specification and is ideal for FO Backplane, Digital Cross Connect, and Custom Applications.

The products are designated the EM12T250 Series (transmitter) and EM12R250 Series (receiver). The units quickly have followed E2O's initial offerings of this type, the EM4T250 Series and EM4R250 Series 4-channel, 2.5 Gbps parallel transmitter/receiver link pair.

"Due to high-volume manufacturing capabilities, E2O can offer these products for under $1,000 per set in moderate volumes," said Bob King, Vice President of Sales. "These parallel fiber optic links come with the popular MPO connector and are housed in a ball grid array module that is compatible with industry-standard surface mount technology. Although these devices are presented currently in a proprietary configuration, we will be supporting industry-standard footprints as we enter production."

Evaluation prototypes will be available in the second quarter of 2001 with the ramp-up to production scheduled for the second half of 2001. The transmitter units currently employ E2O's 850 nm VCSELs (vertical cavity surface-emitting laser). E2O will incorporate its newly developed long-wavelength (1310 nm) VCSEL technology in the near future to support longer link distances and higher throughput.

Other features include: Data rates from 0.25 to 2.5 Gbps (30 Gbps max.), integrated heat sink, compatible with both 50 and 62.5 m optical fiber, 300 m maximum transmission distance, and CML/LVDS DC-coupled electrical interface.
