Corning Cable Systemsle Systems announces the DualCom composite cable family as part of its Outside Plant Broadband Product Solutions, which offer a wide-ranging array of innovative cable and hardware products and services that enable telecommunications companies to provide broadband services. Corning Cable Systemsle Systems' new composite cables economically provide the bandwidth to bring the information superhighway closer to the home while providing copper pairs for remote powering of Optical Network Units. DualCom cables share optical fibers and copper twisted pairs within a single cable jacket, providing material cost and labor savings over other cable designs. DualCom cables are part of Corning Cable Systemsle Systems' line of composite cable designs that include both concentric (single sheath) and figure-8 (multiple sheath) cable designs. Corning Cable Systemsle Systems' composite cables are available with a wide variation in fiber count, numbers of copper pairs and copper pair gauge (American Wire Gauge). The DualCom cable is a single-tube design with a 3.0 mm polypropylene buffer tube as the central element to allow effective routing and protection of the optical fibers.

Copper wire twisted pairs and waterblocking yams are stranded longitudinally along the buffer tube for craft friendliness. Two ripcords, water swellable tape, and armor tape are applied and then a polyethylene sheath is extruded over the DualCom cable package. Available in fiber counts from 1 to 6 and twisted pair counts from 4 to 6 in either 19 or 22 AWG, DualCom cables reduce the overall deployment costs of OSP Broadband networks by minimizing the number of sheaths removed at splice points, entry port sealing requirements at hardware locations, and the cable cost. DualCom cable requires hardware compatible with both fiber and copper splicing in the same enclosure. Corning Cable Systemsle Systems has developed a line of hybrid closures to utilize the advantages of DualCom cables in various applications. The combination of twisted pair and fiber in a single sheath make this cable ideal for use as a broadband node or distribution cables or as a remote camera cable in military, campus and Intelligent Transport System applications.
