Optisphere Networks Inc., a subsidiary of Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc., is introducing Release 2.1 of its metro DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) system, a transparent 64-wavelength (32 if protected) product that can accommodate up to nine nodes on a 100 km ring.

The metro DWDM product from Optisphere features a "universal interface" that is protocol and bit-rate independent. The transparent interface interoperates with all protocols, (e.g., SONET, ATM, IP, ESCON and Gigabit Ethernet). Using built-in transponders, the Metro DWDM product handles bit-rates ranging from 51 Mbit/s to 2.5 Gbit/s per wavelength. Its upgrade path enables the product to scale to 10 Gbit/s. Optisphere's Metro DWDM product features an optical data unit that provides performance monitoring and protection features. Modular in design, the system offers advantages in compactness and low power consumption.

The Metro DWDM system is a versatile, cost-effective solution targeted for use by interexchange carriers and local service providers. Depending on configuration, it can operate as a point-to-point, chain or ring system. It can be deployed in a managed fiber situation when surplus dark fibers are available, and it easily upgrades to provide DWDM services. The system's boundaries can be extended to the enterprise premises, giving service providers the capability to extend protection, monitor the client loop and provide additional services.

Optisphere's Metro DWDM system is managed by a comprehensive network management system, offering an OSI-based Q3 interface to Optisphere's TMN system. It features simple network management protocol SNMP/TL1-based interfaces for independent fault and service management. The system communicates easily with management facilities such as local and network craft terminals.
