RIO Expands Product Portfolio To Include 2.5G And 4.25G DWDM Extended Reach TOSAs

Santa Clara, CA — Redfern Integrated Optics, Inc. (RIO), a developer and manufacturer of optical transmitters for telecommunications, data transmission and other markets, announced that it has expanded its product portfolio to include 2.5Gbps and 4.25Gbps DWDM extended reach transmitter optical sub-assembly (TOSA) products for long reach applications. According to the company, this announcement signifies RIO as the world's first in the industry to offer 2.5Gbps DWDM up to 640km and 4.25Gbps CWDM and DWDM up to 160km in MSA TOSA form factor for pluggable transceiver modules.

The RIO26xx TOSA family is designed to support 2.7Gbps SONET/SDH TDM and DWDM applications, for 180km, 360km and 640km distances over single mode fiber, extending the reach of Metro Area Network (MAN) and eliminating the need for expensive signal regeneration stations.

Similarly, RIO's RIO44xx TOSA product, offered in 80km, 120km and 160km distance options, extends the reach of 4G Fibre Channel for WDM Storage Area Network (SAN) applications, such as business continuity, disaster recovery and data center backup across a metro area.

"We are pleased to expand our DWDM product offering, powered by RIO's high-performance low-cost PLANEX technology, to address the broader needs of our customer base for low-power dissipation and superior wavelength stability long reach transmitters," said Radu Barsan, president and CEO for RIO.

RIO's 2.5Gbps and 4.25Gbps WDM TOSAs are said to offer excellent wavelength stability over temperature, current and aging, and dispersion power penalty less than 2dB at high extinction ratios to ensure sufficient optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) performance. These devices are offered in standard commercial operating temperature (-5 to 75 degrees Celsius) and an extended industrial temperature (-40 to 85 degrees Celsius) option.

RIO offers customers complete transceiver module reference designs suitable for SFP/SFF modules, as well as system-level line card implementations. The products are compatible with commercially available 50 Ohm and 25 Ohm impedance laser diode drivers. TOSAs are available with LC and SC connector receptacles, or with a customized pigtail option.

RIO has developed what it says is the world's first 1550nm 10Gbps directly modulated External Cavity Laser (ECL) for use with 40km and 80km TDM and DWDM applications in an XMD TOSA form factor. RIO also offers 10GbE TOSA products for extended reach 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 10GBASE-ER, ZR and DWDM.

RIO TOSA products are manufactured on a proprietary hybrid integrated optical platform. All RIO products are RoHS compliant.
