Lightower Lights Up Northeast With Nortel 40G Optical Solution
July 1, 2009
Boxborough, MA - Lightower Fiber Networks, a leading metro fiber network and bandwidth service provider serving the northeast United States, is using industry-leading technology from Nortel to offer first-to-market 40G bandwidth service for carriers and large enterprises in the region.
With 400,000 miles of fiber in a network that spans the New England, New York Metro, Long Island and Hudson Valley markets, Lightower specializes in providing customers with a broad range of high bandwidth connectivity services. With the rapid growth of its customer base and increasing demand for bandwidth, Lightower has upgraded its core network backbone to 40G and is uniquely equipped to provide connectivity services from 1G to 40G. To prepare for future growth, Lightower will begin testing Nortel 100G services on its network later this summer.
"As the first bandwidth provider to offer true 40G service in the Northeast, Lightower has put significant investment in building a robust fiber network that is second-to-none in performance and reliability," said Jason Campbell, senior vice president, Lightower Fiber Networks. "Nortel provides a plug and play 40G solution that also has the flexibility to offer multiple types of services from a single platform. Their equipment delivers low network latency on both 10G and 40G connections, and Nortel provides us with a clear evolution path to 100G."
Lightower's 40G network is powered by Nortel's Optical Multiservice Edge (OME) 6500 solution along with its 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine technology. Together, the technologies provide a 40G solution that can overcome hurdles associated with many DWDM deployments. The OME 6500's unique electronic dispersion compensation capabilities at both 10G and 40G completely eliminate the need for additional in-line compensation equipment, and results in a much simpler and cost effective network design.
"For bandwidth providers like Lightower, network performance and reliability must also be paired with the ability to quickly turn up new services," said Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. "The unique combination of ROADM and dispersion compensation technology in our OME 6500 platform creates a simple network design that allows Lightower to quickly respond to their customers' requests for new connectivity services."
With 46 wins to date for its 40G solution, Nortel has been leading the industry in 40G shipments for the past three quarters, including a 41 percent share in Q1 2009 based on the Dell'Oro Group. Nortel is also a leader in the development of 100G solutions, with seven successful 100G field trials already announced and availability of the Nortel 100G solution planned for later this year.
